Skot Olsen's Frankenstein online

Hello again!

I'm writing to thank all of you who attended the opening reception of the Frankenstein show at Bear and Bird Gallery earlier this month. The turn out was tremendous, and it was fun to see so many friends, both new and old. A special thanks to Amanda Magnetta-Ottati, who organized a successful event, both online and in her gallery!

Many panels were sold on and after the opening, but there are still many great pieces available. Artwork is available for purchase online at www.bearandbird.com. If you’d like to see the show up close and in person, it runs until August 30th, 2008. There are hundreds of my original, sepia-painted, panels from the Frankenstein edition of Graphics Classics, illustrating Rod Lott's adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic tale. Graphics Classics is a series of books (graphic novels) presenting illustrated adaptations of great fiction for contemporary readers, ages 12 to adult. Each volume features the works of the world's greatest authors, illustrated by some of the best artists working today in the fields of comics, illustration and fine arts. The book is available for sale through Amazon.com and other fine book sellers, especially Tate's Comics!

Skot Olsen's Frankenstein

Hello Friends,

I'm writing to announce an upcoming show at Bear and Bird gallery, in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area. This small and innovative gallery, perched atop arguably the world's best comic book store, will showcase hundreds of my original, sepia-painted, panels from the Frankenstein edition of Graphics Classics, illustrating Rod Lott's adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic tale. The book is available for sale through Amazon.com and other fine book sellers.

If you find yourself in the South Florida area on Saturday, August 2nd, please join me for the opening night festivities, from 7:00PM - 10:00PM.

As a special treat, DJ Elyse will present a live version of a set specifically composed with a Frankenstein theme. Elyse is known for her live DJ performances in collaboration with visual artists, to create an entire thematic and artistic ambiance.

I'm also hoping my friend, Novi (world renowned tattoo artist, owner of Babylon Tattoo in Fort Lauderdale) will show up. Novi closely resembles Frankenstein, and shares the monster's fear of fire.

If you can't make it to opening night, but still want to stop by, the exhibition run dates are from August 2nd to August 30th, 2008.

If you're on a budget, don't worry! The artwork will be priced for entry-level art buyers, and this is almost all of the work that was left unburned, following the December 2007 fire at Harold Golen Gallery that destroyed everything else I had been working on!

Spring 2008

As some of you may remember, the Harold Golen Gallery burned up in a fire this past December. Along with hundreds of works of art were twenty-one of my paintings. Ten of which were stored in the room the fire started and were consequently reduced to ash. Eleven new paintings from my Neo Psychedelic series were hanging in the main room on the far wall and were badly smoke damaged. A single piece, Black Water Harvest, was displayed in one of the smaller rooms. At first we were very optimistic about the possible restoration of the eleven psychedelic paintings, but sadly, none could be saved. Only Black Water Harvest was able to be cleaned. Apparently, it flung itself on the floor face down and only its back was scorched. The cause of the fire is believed to be the City of Miami's electric meter, but the city maintains that it was the electrical wiring leading from it. Harold Golen has since found a temporary gallery space in Miami while his gallery is being redesigned and rebuilt. I can tell by his excitement that the new place will rival the original and he has big plans for this year and next. Fortunately, the gallery was insured by Frenkel Insurance/Fireman's Fund and, while the artists have yet to receive compensation, we been assured that the artists will all be paid for lost work.

I will miss what I lost, especially since six of the new paintings were never photographed -- that was scheduled to be just a few days after the fire. So, if you saw the show, consider yourself lucky because I thought it was one of the finest group exhibitions of Psychedelic art ever assembled. However, I am hard at work on a new series of nautical paintings to be shown at the The Shooting Gallery in San Francisco this coming December. The new work will combine elements of the psychedelic series with my nautical paintings. I'm very happy with what I have so far and can't wait to show it to you.

My New Website

If you haven't visited my site for a while, I invite you to check it out again. It's been completely redesigned and overhauled with many new features, including a blog, improved image resolution with details, print downloads and more! Soon, an audio tour feature will be added to enhance the painting descriptions. As a way to say "thanks" for subscribing to my newsletter, I'm offering a free, high-res image download. Simply print it out and bring it to me at an opening or event, and I'll sign it.

Upcoming shows and events

Harold Golen/Art Basel Miami

This December, during Art Basel, I am pleased to say that I will be the featured artist in the Subjective Reality show at the Harold Golen Gallery in Miami. There will be opening receptions for the show on Decemeber 6th, 7th, and 8th, with original music by elyse on the 7th. Subjective Reality is a group show of Neo-Psychedelic art by some of the most cutting edge artists the movement has to offer. I'll have eleven new paintings on display in the main gallery. Meanwhile, Harold Golen will be showing some stellar Lowbrow and Pop Surrealist work in his other gallery rooms. The show will be a religious experience of the psychedlic, and has already begun to raise a few eyebrows (no pun intended) as well as generate substantial media attention.

Bear and Bird Gallery

I will have a piece hanging at the Bear and Bird Gallery for the Small Stuff show on November 24th. Owner/Curator Amanda Magnetta has compiled works that are small/affordable -- keeping the needs of holiday shoppers in mind. This show differs from most others in the sense that it is "cash and carry." When a piece is sold, it comes right off the wall and goes home with it's new owner, so get there early!

And speaking of not-to-miss art events . . .

Art Scavenger Hunt/Fort Lauderdale, Florida

It's time once again for the Art Scavenger Hunt in Ft. Lauderdale! I've been a part of this fun event since its beginning, way back in the 20th century. Local artists hide artwork along a pre-determined route through the back alleys and streets around the New River area in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Anyone who wishes to look for art is to meet at Tavern 213 at 8:00pm on Saturday the 24th, where they will be given a map. Any art found along the route is free and up for grabs. The roster of artists involved is always impressive, and this year is no exception with a list including art giants Sas and Colin Christian, Pooch, Lebo, Santiago, N! Satterfield, and many more. If you plan to go, get there early. Over the years, word has spread, and this event is usually very crowded. So make sure your flashlight has batteries and your eyeballs are peeled, because there will be plenty of great art to be found if you look hard enough for it.
