oil on board (view detail)
To a sailor, the light house can mean more than just a warning of a reef or coastline, it can also symbolize home. It is a light in the distance to let one know that there is still a dry world out there where there is possibly a safe place, a dry house and a warm woman waiting. In this painting, the lighthouse is a woman standing on firm rock and leaning on an anchor. She casts a light out into the dark and stormy night searching for those in distress and reminding them that there is a safe haven waiting for them. It also symbolizes the role of women in the 19th century sailing culture.
