Poseidon is the Greek god of the sea. Called Neptune by the Romans, it was he who held the fate of sailors and could raise storms and cause earthquakes. He was all powerful to a culture like the Greeks who relied so much on the mercy of the sea for their very existence. Since this series is largely inspired by 19th century maritime art, I decided to paint him as a steamboat captain. I have always been inspired by the imagery of Indian art so I gave him many arms to hold the things that symbolize his power. The Anchor shows that he is the base of the sea, the force that grounds the whole ecosystem. The Harpoon shows he is master of all living things and is ready to take away life as well as provide for others. He is holding a delicate piece of coral, this type of coral is called "the Bishop's Mitre" it is a sign that he is holy and that he is the God of HIs domain. Poseidon had other symbols such as the dolphin and the trident. These are incorporated in his various medals and decoration on his uniform. He is stepping through a tunnel of water entering our world from his in a show of power as if to say he can intervene when he wishes.
